The
agates from Cubuk (region North Ankara) are usually found in the rhyolites
lava beds and
andesite and are coming from the volcanic Miocene age of about
18,2 19 million years ago. The agates in
rhyolite were deposited as open
space fillings, in crevice- and fissure-vein cavities. These agates
Pseudomorph included
high concentric sagenitic banded and have bright colours. These agates are
most of the time irregular. You can find some regular like thundereggs. The
agates are often pseudomorph crystal (group of zeolotic, mostly
laumontite, perlialite, natrolite) included with sagenite. These agates contains the
following minerals: Al, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Na, sb, Zn, Zr,.
Some
agate are encrusted with calcite rhombohedral, aragonite, common opal, cinnibar.
Some unknown
minerals have grown in the agate
cavities before being replaced and preserved by the gentle growth of agate.
The colours tend to come in a range from white to brown, black, blue, red,
yellow, green, grey, white and lavender.
Until now it is unknown how sagenite banded came in the
Cubuk agates. My theory is that Cubuk agates contains often organic oil.
Because of the chemical process (+/- 200 °C
) the sagenite banded developed.
Actually you can find agates everywhere within Turkey, but the
most beautiful agates come from North of Ankara, Cubuk. Within an area
of 30 kilometers of Cubuk you can find agates. It is a volcanic place at
2000 meter high. In Turkey you can also find agates in Yozgat, Tokat, Amasya,
Sinop, Kastamonu, Eskisehir, Izmir, Canakkale, Kütahya, Denizli, Mugla, Van,
Agri, Ararat, Erzincan, Hatay, Kars, Sivas and Hakkari. In Kizilcihamam
Camlidere (also in North Ankara) also very nice agates are found, but the Turkish
Government made a geologic park, which is not public anymore. Also a 10 kilometers area in Cubuk, Ankara is forbidden
for people/companies to dig agates because there
are also perlite mines (MTA Turkish Government) in this area. Also there is
a gold mine but this one is already closed.
